Drawer Sign-off

A second person approving a closed cash drawer before its over or short reaches the ledger.

When a cashier closes a till, the physical count is compared with the cash the system expected and the difference is recorded. Drawer sign-off adds a second step: a supervisor, who must not be the person who closed the drawer, reviews the count and signs it off.

The sign-off is usually the moment the difference is posted to the books, against a cash over and short account. Posting it at sign-off rather than at close leaves room for a recount, so a miscount is corrected before it becomes an entry, and it puts two names against every variance — the separation of duties a cash control depends on.
