Year to date accumulates a figure — revenue, spend, payroll, tax deducted — from the first day of the year up to now. It smooths out the noise in any single month and shows the trajectory.

Which year is being used has to be stated. Payroll YTD normally follows the tax year and drives statutory certificates, while a sales YTD usually follows the financial year, and the two rarely start on the same day.
