Key Performance Indicatornoun · abbr.

A quantified measure tracked against a target to judge performance.

A KPI pairs a defined metric with a target, an owner and a review rhythm. Without all three it is merely a number on a report that nobody acts on.

The discipline is restraint. A handful of KPIs that drive decisions beats forty that describe the business, and each one needs a written definition so the figure does not shift when the analyst does.
