Finding and merging records that describe the same real-world thing.

Deduplication identifies records referring to one entity — the same supplier entered three ways, the same item under two codes — and merges them while preserving the transaction history attached to each.

Merging is riskier than it looks: history, balances and links must all follow to the surviving record. Preventing duplicates at creation is far cheaper than merging them later.
