Audit Trailnoun

A tamper-evident record of who did what, when, and to which record.

An audit trail logs every material action — creation, edit, approval, deletion, login — with the actor, timestamp and before-and-after values. It is written automatically and cannot be edited by users.

Its value appears at exactly two moments: when something has gone wrong and needs reconstructing, and when an auditor asks you to prove a control operated. Neither can be satisfied retrospectively.
