Available to promise is stock on hand minus everything already reserved for open orders, plus incoming supply that will arrive within the promise window. It is the number a salesperson should quote from.
Getting ATP right is what lets you make delivery commitments you can keep. Without it, two orders can be promised the same unit and one customer is always disappointed.
ATP = Stock on hand − Allocated + Confirmed incoming
Incoming supply only counts if it lands before the promised date.
