A barcode encodes an identifier — a SKU, batch, serial or bin — in a pattern a scanner can read. One-dimensional codes carry short numbers; two-dimensional codes such as QR and DataMatrix carry much more in less space.
Barcodes matter because typing is where inventory accuracy dies. Scanning a receipt, pick or count is faster than keying it and eliminates the transposed digit.
