Signature Capturenoun

Signature capture records a mark drawn on a phone, tablet or touchscreen against the movement it relates to — a delivery received, stock issued out, an asset handed to a custodian. The drawing is worth little on its own, so the printed name of the signer and the moment they signed are stored beside it: a squiggle identifies nobody, but a squiggle with a name and a timestamp names a counterparty.

It is an operational control rather than a legal instrument. There is no certificate or key pair behind it, so it is not a cryptographic digital signature and carries no e-signature certification — but it settles most delivery and custody disputes, because those are settled by showing a person their own mark rather than by litigation. A signer who is not physically present needs remote e-signature instead, which is a different mechanism.
