Bill of Lading

The carrier document that acts as receipt, contract and title for sea freight.

A bill of lading does three jobs at once: it receipts the goods, evidences the carriage contract, and — when issued as a negotiable original — represents title to the cargo.

Because it can transfer ownership, the original document is controlled carefully. Cargo generally cannot be released without it, which is why a delayed courier can hold up a container as effectively as a customs query.
