A bill of materials lists every component, sub-assembly and quantity needed to produce one finished unit. Multi-level BOMs nest sub-assemblies, each with its own component list.
The BOM is what connects a production plan to a purchasing plan: multiply it by the build quantity and you have your material requirement. An out-of-date BOM produces shortages and surplus in the same run.
How it is calculated
Component requirement = BOM quantity per unit × Units to build ÷ (1 − Expected scrap %)
Include expected scrap or the last few units always come up short.
