A control chart tracking the average of sampled measurements over time.
An X-bar chart plots the mean of small samples taken at intervals, against control limits derived from the process itself. Points outside the limits, or non-random patterns within them, signal that something has changed.
It separates ordinary variation from a genuine shift, which is the whole purpose of statistical process control: it tells you when to intervene and, just as usefully, when to leave the process alone.
