Work in progress covers items part-way through production, valued at the materials, labour and overhead absorbed so far. It sits on the balance sheet between raw materials and finished goods.
WIP is the hardest inventory category to count and the easiest to misvalue, because a partly built unit has no natural unit of measure. Limiting how much WIP is open at once is the practical control.
