X12

A North American standard for exchanging business documents electronically.

ANSI ASC X12 defines numbered transaction sets — 850 for a purchase order, 856 for a despatch advice, 810 for an invoice — that trading partners exchange as structured EDI messages.

It long predates modern web APIs and is still entrenched in retail and logistics supply chains. Where a large customer mandates it, the real question is whether to implement it directly or route through a translation service.
