XML

XML encodes data as nested, labelled elements that both people and machines can read. It underpins many e-invoicing, customs and banking formats, where the schema is fixed by a regulator rather than negotiated between parties.

JSON has largely replaced it for new web APIs, but XML persists wherever a formal schema and strict validation matter more than brevity — which describes most statutory reporting.
