Tail Spendnoun
The many small purchases that make up a small share of value but most transactions.
Tail spend is the long tail of low-value, high-frequency buying spread across hundreds of suppliers. It is typically a fifth of spend but the majority of purchase orders and supplier records.
It is rarely worth sourcing item by item. The practical strategies are consolidation onto fewer suppliers, catalogues or cards, and automation — reducing handling cost rather than unit price.
