Hazardous Materials

Goods needing special handling, labelling and declaration in transit.

Hazardous materials — flammables, corrosives, compressed gases, lithium batteries, certain chemicals — are sorted into UN classes and must be packed, labelled, documented and declared to defined rules for each transport mode.

The rules bite hardest at handover. An undeclared dangerous good found at an airport stops the entire consignment, and the penalty falls on the shipper rather than the carrier.
