Payroll gathers each employee’s earnings, allowances, benefits and absences, applies statutory and voluntary deductions, and produces net pay, payslips and the returns owed to authorities.

It is unusually unforgiving: it runs to a fixed deadline, cannot be partially completed, and errors are both visible to staff and expensive to correct. Most of the risk sits in the inputs, not the calculation.
