Zone Picking

Assigning pickers to fixed areas, with orders passing between zones.

In zone picking each picker covers one area and only picks the lines in their zone. Orders move between zones sequentially, or zones pick in parallel and merge at consolidation.

Pickers become fast within a familiar area and congestion drops, but throughput is limited by the busiest zone. Balancing work across zones is the ongoing management task.
